Weight Gain

Postby goatsrule2003 on Fri Mar 13, 2009 9:59 am

I know I posted about this on the other board many many moons ago if I'm not mistaken but the thread must've gotten deleted.

What is the best way to get weight on a goat?

Letme give a little information:

This is Oddball, and Pygmy Doe who is 8 yrs. old. She is a larger pygmy. I'm not 100% how tall, but I would say around 20-22inches tall, and now that she's underweight around 35 lbs. She had been staying around 50lbs. She had wormers back in the fall and a fecal was done and the vet said she had no worms. She had been given Dimethox, Ivomec Plus, and I think Valbazen but would have to check the records in the other room. She is currently getting fed Dumor Goat once a day and gets free choice orchard grass/grass mix hay. Her belly isn't all that thin, but her backbone and face are awful. You can outline her cheekbones and feel her boney backbone she's so thin. I don't know what else to do to put weight on her all over. So does anyone have any suggestions? I know being older she'll be harder to keep weight on, but there should surely be something out there that can put some weight on.

Thanks for any help!
Sharon

Sharon
She needs another fecal done first.
You always add beet pulp or alfalfa pellets to her feed. My vet is now suggesting Senior Horse Feed, as it contains more fat than goat feed and it is a complete feed. If they are having teeth problems due to age or are missing teeth, you can add water to it and let it turn into mush, so they can eat it easier. I currently have two seniors on it and they love it.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Thanks Yvonne! I will see if we can get the Alfalfa Pellets, Beet Pulp, etc. I feed both Alfalfa Pellets and Beet Pulp to my horse. So I know TSC has both of them.

I hadn't heard about the Senior Horse, but that does make sense. Her teeth still appear fine, none missing, and she eats dry dumor without a problem. So I just think she needs more weight from something the Dumor isn't giving or she's not processing, or something.
I'll see if we can get some of the above though and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks so much Yvonne!

Oddball is doing ALOT better. She is getting 2 cups of Alfalfa pellets a day and doing fabulous. She's already putting weight on and looking better. :)
