Sore mouth treatment

Postby tinytoez on Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:11 am

It is that time of year, where the sore mouth will start popping up in some herds. This is transmitted many different ways, deer carry it into the field, birds will carry it in, some have found they get it after getting hay or straw from a new source (my guess is deer or birds dropped it in the field), new goats bring it in....any variation of host delivery.

While it is painful to a goat, especially if a doe has it on the udder, and is highly contagious to animals and humans, it is not the end of the world. There are may treatments that work, but bottom line is the sore has to be dried up and the owner must be aware that the scab is a carrier so be careful of touching even the scab.

I have coated the spot(s) with iodine to dry it, if on the lip I have mixed one part Vaseline to 3 parts iodine and swabbed it on the spot, and I have used canker sore medicine on the spots. All seem to clear it in two or three days easy.

One remedy I have heard about is as follows
A shot of Pen G, 1cc per 100lb weight. Subcutanteous (under the skin) both mama and babies. I use Dura Pen because it's a 3/day suspention. Then I fill a spray bottle with Listerine mouth wash (or generic) and spray both the mouth and the bag, and then the kids mouths. I do it 2-3 times a day. Be careful not to get it into there eyes. The penicillin is for secondary infection like mastitis.

One person has even used Today (medication for mastitis) on the sores (all the medication is is heavy duty penicillin).

What are some treatments you have use?
