Bottle Baby issues

Postby tinytoez on Mon Dec 01, 2008 9:18 am

ok, got three bottle babies, two are outside one is inside (the youngest). Inside one is fine. The two outside have a case of the runs. Here is the history

Have a Calf-Tel for their house and have a heat lamp in there for the cold days and nights - right outside my back door
Both are 6 weeks old.
Both very playful still
Getting two 22 oz bottles a day (have been getting this for three weeks)
Both are eating whole grain (oats, barly and cracked corn) as well as 16% starter pellet with Rum.
Have been eating grains for 4 weeks, have been on starter pellet for 5 days.
They eat about 1 1/2 to 2 lbs a day total.
Neither have a fever
Both have had loose stools to runs for 6 days
have been on Sulmet for 5 days as well as the rumensin in the feed (can't get Demethox, every one has said back ordered), stools stay the same.
Both have good appetites, never do they not eat
Have thought about giving some Neomycin - what do you think?

Oh gosh that doesn't sound good! I'm no help, Kendra, but maybe it's coccidia and the Sulmet hasn't had time to work??

i have a little over a half a bottle of di methes(sp) so if you eed it come & get it. when any of my bottle babies get scoures i give them3cc of pepto mixed with 3cc of nutradrenc
that usually clears it right up. but i very seldom have one that scours. maybe it is ecoli. i alsoi give mine 2cc of c&d toxoid orally when they go down & don't eat.

I am leaning towards the ecoli also. I have started them on neomycin (it works on that).

Kendra
Last spring there was several of us here that had a problem with scours and it wasn't coccidia. Turns it out was tapeworms. What finally cleared it up, was 3 days of Valbazen, injectable iron and pedilyte. I used probios as well.

Yes in babies that young, that was what was confusing all of us. Then Debbie decided to try the Valbazen 1cc per 10 pounds for three days and found that her babies were passing worms...She lost two, but saved another two (two were on bottles)....I lost one and several others had lost babies. I all but ran outside when she called and I saved the two I had in the sick stall....pretty darn weird.

well, I wormed and did the neomycin and it seems to have cleared up, so one or the other fixed it!!
