How to feed AC

Postby goatsrule2003 on Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:22 pm

For those that feed AC to their wethers/bucks, how do you get the goat to eat it?

I've got a friend who got a wether from us and he's gotten UC. She's having to keep him AC continually now, and she said she has tried to mix it with his feed, in a syringe with water and squirting it in his mouth but he got more on her then him, Jello, Applesauce, Molasses, Maple Syrup, Pudding, and just water mixed with feed.

Do any of you have any suggestions???

I'm wanting to help her in anyway I can. She loves her little boy to death and I just was trying to help her out.

Thanks,
Sharon

AC has a very nasty taste, I know not but choice but by force (he spit it back and my mouth was open). I have mixed it in a table spoon of corn syrup and mixed that in his feed (had to feed him separate) and just not given in. After a few days of not eating his feed he finally gave in and ate it all, but i had to make sure that his hay was somewhat limited and he had no access to grain except what I gave him.

Now I have had to drench it and when I do that I mix a little sugar with it as well, it seems to make it a little easier to go down, but I have never been able to drench it with a syringe, I had to go spend about $20 on a drench unit that has the tube on the end of the syringe, it makes it easier to get to the back of the throat.

I have attached a picture of one like mine and a like to hoegger's, they have one for about $10
