Fever....

Postby goatsrule2003 on Fri Jul 11, 2008 4:55 pm

Now we have Faith who has a fever. She's a grey/white doe (also my Mom's), who was born December 21,2006. She weighs approx. 40 lbs or so. She's a Pygmy/Alpine mix.
She's never had kids and is not currently preggers.
We noticed her laying in the sun and acting kinda off. We went and checked her, she appeared fine.
Her gut is not enlarged at all. Firm on her stomach side, spongy on her "kid" side.
Her temp is 106.3 as of 5:41pm. Earlier it was 107.5

After just losing Buffy we did the following as a prevention incase her's was to try and turn out like Buffy's:
She had a dose of CD Anti (5 cc's Orally and 5 cc's SQ in the armpit)
She had a dose of Twin Pen, 3 cc's of Fort. B to go ahead and give her a boost, wormed her with Dimethox(incase of Coccidia),had probios with the Dimethox, and gave her some red cell.
We have used Baby Aspirin before to get a fever to come down, so gave her a couple aspirin too.

We have her in the barn in a stall now with a fan on her. She is still eating, pooping, peeing, drinking water, and generally acts fine. She fights like the devil if you try to check her temp, and is still our bossy lil' Faith. Had she not have been laying in the sun with her neck stretched out we wouldn't have thought anything was up.
She's appears overall fine. Her eyelids and gums are bright pink and healthy, she has no cuts or scraps on her body, hair coat is nice, soft and shiny, no lice/mites, and she has no visable signs of anything wrong.

Can I do anything else to bring her temp down, and could her laying the sun have caused her temp to get this high?
It's came down some, so I'm grateful for that.

She's not appearing to be at all acting like Buffy (knock on wood). She just seems to have the fever. I know the fever had to come from somewheres' so I'm hoping one of you can help my unknowledegable self AGAIN!

Thanks so much!
Sharon

At 8:28pm her temp was 106.8

I sure hope this all stops soon...I guess they say they come in threes(Pandora's leg has something up with it now, because of her old injury from endurance riding).

Sharon,
Yes laying in the sun will cause their temp to go up, but not that UP....
How much pen are you giving her? Do you have Banamine?
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

We gave her 2 cc's of Twin Pen and no we don't have banamine and the vet's closed. We had some a good long while ago, and it got to old and was threw away. Our large animal vet won't just give us rx either, he's mr. see all(he has to see them), not do all(won't do alot).
We could possibly get some from our small animal vet, he knows us better then about anyone, because we help volunteer for the rescue he helps with.

9:20pm - 106.3
It went back down some.

She's still eating anything and everything pratically. We've not given any grains/treats though. Just greens and hay, then some lettuce and carrots.
She's still pooping and peeing. She has eaten some minerals and baking soda as well. She appears fine other then her temp.
I see no change in her whatsoever, besides her temp and her acting a lil' more sluggish. She's laying down some of the time and standing up moving around the rest of the time.

Thanks and sorry to bother y'all again!

Heres another question how often are you giving the Pen?
I would give it every 12 hours.
You can do acohol rubs and that will help bring down the temp. Just take a cotton ball and some rubbing acohol and rub it on the inside of her legs and belly. I am thinking that perhaps you should give the aspirn every 12 hours as well.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

We gave it(TP) this afternoon around 2pm or so.
We gave her just a few baby aspirin around 2 also. Then tonight around 9pm, gave her a 4 adult aspirin, for a dosage I found on the Fias Co Farm website.
Checked her temp at 10:35pm and it's 105.2
WOOT WOOT, it's going back down.

Should we give anymore Fort. B?

Do you have any idea what would be causing this? Just overheating?

Thanks!

Sharon, do you have any horse people around that might sell or loan you a syringe of Banamine?
When Apache and Edward had pneumonia they both ran fevers up to 107 and even with the Banamine I had to do alcohol baths on them every few hours. My vet used a whole bottle on Edward! She would pour it in a couple of paper towels and rub it under his legs and rub it all over him, concentrating on his 'hot spots' like under the legs.
When Rosie was toxic that time from a dead baby I gave her aspirin every 12 hours for pain.
Good luck!

Sharon
With the absence of any other syptoms, it could be one of a million things. So at this point we treat the fever. I have never seen a goat lay in the sun and get THAT hot. I have also never seen a goat with that high of a fever, still eat. Either way it concerns me.
Yes as long as her fever is up give her the B vitamin every 12 hours, the Pen every 12 hours and the aspirin every 12 hours. Watch her for any additional syptoms like star grazing uneven pupil dilation, staggering or anything that just doesn't seem "right"...
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Jamie,
There's only two people near us who has horses. One of those doesn't hardly do anything with his horses, the other cares alot for her horses, but is a older type farm lady, so I doubt she would have it. I need to check with our small animal vet when we go to take dogs to get rabies at the end of the month.
Her temp at 10:15 was 104.1 WOOHOO!!!
She's still piggy out on hay and greens, and is still pooping/peeing, and drinking water. Acting very alert! Walking around, moving around, etc.

Yvonne,
We're keeping an eye on her and haven't seen any star gazing, staggering, or anything off. The only thing that's off is her temperature.
We're giving the Aspirin,Pen and B every 12 hrs. She hates the shots and fights like the devil to get away from having them. She's doing great besides the temp.

Belly still feels fine, no bloatyness, or anything. It really has me confused.
We have in the stall still with the fan on, and see seems to enjoy the fan.

So I guess we'll have to just play it by ear.

You may have caught "whatever" earlier than you did before, so keep up with the pen for a full 5 days. And the B until she is better. Her temp is almost back to normal. Once she gets to normal, stop the aspirin but take her temp in about 6 hours to see if she is staying normal.
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Alrighty, going up to check her temp again, and to give her some more water. We're keeping her water as fresh as we can, to keep her drinking it.
She's still alert. I'll update you later.

Thanks so much for your help!:)

At about 12:30 her temp was 103.3

That is GREAT!!! I'm sooooooooooo happy!

Here's two videos of her. One eating and one laying down. The fan is what's in the background blowing and making wind noise. haha

Good Job!!!
Now keep up with the Pen for the rest of the course and continue the B vitamin until tomorrow..If she is still doing good tomorrow, you can discontinue the B vitamin.
Make sure to check her temp tonite to make sure she is keeping it down..

We've kept check on it every hour and half or so. Now it's back up to 105.0

It had went down to 103.4, then 102.4, then back up to 105 (after she laid in the sun). She acted chilled (like when you have a fever and can't get hot or cold), so we let her out for a little. She laid in the sun for about 15 minutes and that's when it went back up to 105. We're just not going to let her back out for now I guess.
We'll continue with the pen and b, as well as aspirin now untill her temp goes down and stays down.

I just want to know what's causing this. It's so frustrating in not knowing what it is, and why it's happening. Maybe it's just a goat "bug"? Like a 24 hr bug we people get???

Sharon
That was what I was afraid of, while there are a couple of things that can cause this (Septicmia Listerosis, Pnemonia to name the WORST two) I can't say yet, what it is because she isn't exhibiting any other syptoms.
That being said, I want you to up the Pen G to 4cc every 12 hours. It has to be high enough to get pass the blood brain barrier if it is Septicmia and and high enough to do any good if it is Pnemonia.
Keep up with the aspirin every 12 hours and the B Vitamin. Make sure that she stays drinking water and eating.
Do you have any other antibotic? And what are they?
The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Alrighty Yvonne..I can up the pen. We've been giving Twin Pen, above you mentioned Pen G, so I wasn't sure which would be better to give her? Pen G?

Here's what we have, some are Antibotics, some aren't, just giving you kinda what we have:

We have Agricillin (Pro Pen G), Twin Pen, Bio-Mycin, La-200, CD Anti, CD/T, Red Cell, and Tylan 50. If it's something else that we need and TSC may have it, Momma could probably go to TSC here in town.

Stick with your Twin Pen for now. Lets see how she is tomorrow.
Just keep a close on eye on her for any other syptoms. Make sure that she is drinking water and eating....also get her some probios just to keep the good bacteria going in her rumen.

Okay as of about 9pm it's 103.1
She got another dose of Aspirin around 6:30-7pm this evening.
We gave her her B shot and Twin Pen (4 cc's) around 8:30-9pm.
So, we're just gonna go from here, I reckon.
She's still not showing symptoms of anything else either, so I hope she's getting over this, or atleast won't get worse.

Thanks Kendra, I hope so to.
We're definately not thinking where anywheres near the finish. I'd rather think we're not near the finish, and be there quicker then we think, then to think we're already there. We've got our eyes on her every few minutes and we're checking her temp every 1hr-1hr and a half. Keeping constant check on her!
After losing Buffy, we can't lose another.
Faith is still fighting and still doing great! She has the fever, that's eat.

Good News!
Just keep up the good work.
Take her temp this morning before you give her the aspirin to see if she can keep her temp down. If she can regulate her temp, you can discontinue the aspirin. If course if she can't give her the aspirin again.

Excellent news! At 9:20am, before we gave any medicine, it was 102.6

We didn't give any aspirin this morning.
She had her last Aspririn last night around 6:30-7pm.
We did go ahead and give her 4 cc's of the Twin Pen, and her B Shot. She is still eating fine. We gave her 1/2 cup of Dumor this morning, and she ate it as well.
Haven't seen her drink anything yet this morning, but she could've overnight, so we'll just watch her today and see.
I'm so happy to report her fever is broken so far. We've got Church this morning, but as soon as it's over and we get out, we're going to check on her and her temp. Keep your fingers and hooves crossed please!! :D
