Apache probably has Urinary Calculi

Postby RosePatch on Sun Aug 17, 2008 7:00 pm

I've been treating Apache for half the day and talked and texted back and forth with Kendra during that time but I feel we're still in an emergency situation because he hasn't peed.
I noticed him this afternoon just looking 'funny'. His ears were hanging down like he didn't feel good and when he went to pasture he seem to be walking stiff in his back legs like he was uncomfortable. Upon closer inspection he was grinding his teeth and yawning, a sure sign of distress with Apache.
He would eat some green stuff and has been eating hay on and off all day but he won't drink water, which I guess is a good thing to prevent his bladder from bursting. His temp was 105.4 and my Banamine is real old but I gave it to him anyway because it couldn't hurt, might help. I also gave him a baby aspirin to be on the safe side.
He ate 15 cranberry pills and I've drenched him with 2tsps of AC in 30cc of water.
I took his temp an hour after the meds and it was down to 103.4 and he continued to eat hay.
He pooped but still hasn't peed. He acted like he was trying to at one time but he didn't hunch up or act in pain.
Finally he has laid down, not in a bad position but his normal "I'm ready to chew my cud" position and still doesn't act like he's in pain.
I have him isolated so I can watch for him to pee.

Yep, AC is what I drenched him with in addition to the cranberry pills.
I forgot to say that Apache is a wether also.
I was reading my AC instructions and it says to drench them with it every 12 hours, which I will do, but I was also telling Kendra that if he's no better tomorrow I will call the vet. If nothing else, I can get a fresh bottle of Banamine for his pain.

Jamie, I am sorry, I missed your last two texts till just now, my battery died on my phone.

Poop is good, things are still working on one side.

I am like Fritzie, once I saw pee I kept up the treatment for a week to make sure all was cleaned out.

That's what I'll do.
How often can he have a baby aspirin?
I knew sure as the world that by not having fresh Banamine I would need it....grrrr! It's too old to work because he's still in some pain. He grinds his teeth occasionally and he's stood back up now.

what sticks with me is every 6 hrs on the baby asprin, and I can't find it anywhere on the web. I will keep looking though.

Jamie, if he will take them I would offer him more cranberry pills. I did mine every 2 to 3 hrs. That will also produce an acid to break up the stones.

He peed! It's not a huge amount but it's something. I've got wooden floors in my barn so there's a wet spot about 12"X12". He was standing there eating hay when I went out just now but he's still grinding his teeth.
Thanks Kendra, I'll give him another aspirin before I go to work. That sounds right on the dosage. I remembered the dog vet telling me to give Rosie an adult aspirin when she was down and I think he said to give one every 12 hours so what you said falls in line with that.
Thanks Sharon. Keep praying. We're not out of the woods yet.
Oh yeah Kendra, I've been opening cranberry pills and putting them in a bowl and he's licking at them like loose minerals so he's keeping some in his system constantly.

your half way there!!! Yvonne is right, output is key to healing but intake is needed to produce output.

Finally I'm home. Apache hasn't peed or pooped since this morning and has drank no water. I'm going to give him some salted peanuts and a little salt to lick and see if that will stimulate his thirst. He's still eating hay and still grinding his teeth some. The thing with teeth grinding with Apache is that it isn't always a sign of pain but sometimes stress. He's locked in a stall by himself and isn't happy with the arrangements right now but that's just how it has to be as long as I'm monitoring his intake and output.
He's moving around fine, seems alert and is chewing his cud.

I will. I'm getting ready to drench him with AC, cranberry pills and another baby aspirin and will also put some tea in there. He's crying for grain which is a good sign I guess. I'm not letting him have anything but hay.

I'm trying to figure out why he suddenly got this problem and it could be from some green corn fodder. Would that do it? They've always eaten fodder and never had a problem but it's the only thing different I can think of.
And I'm also using the different minerals I got from Hoeggers. Could that have thrown him off balance?

Boy ain't that the truth!
I gave him all the stuff previously mentioned and ten minutes later he peed a big puddle this time. Then he drank about 3" of water out of a gallon bucket and started munching hay again.
Either the peeing or the aspirin made him feel better because he is now talking to me and hollering for the other goats. He's not made a sound in two days and Apache is very verbal.

The minerals shouldn't have done it. I am wondering if he just got dehydrated and got too hot. Heat stress will do strange things. Heather had a llama get heat stress about 6 weeks ago and was staggering around and could barely walk. She contacted a couple of llama people and then the vet, who suggested that she set her up with some fans and cool water and she was back to normal within in the day. Very strange indeed.

Well I decided this morning to quit torturing him...lol! I went out at 6:30 and he started talking to me as soon as he saw me. He had peed a big puddle too. I will be at work all day so I decided to turn him back into the pasture so maybe moving around will get things to working better and get him in a better mood. He's been miserable locked away from everybody and what good does it do to lock him up if I'm not here to monitor him anyway. He went straight to the pasture and started eating some leaves.

Jamie, if he likes to eat the cranberry pills keep giving him those at least once a day. If he is out of the woods I would give him 1 per 25 lbs as a preventative each day, as well as top dressing his feed with the AC.
